Weekly Update Oct 22-26

Weekly Newsletter Grade 5

Dates:  October 22-26, 2018

Dear Parents and Students, 

We start this week on day 6 on Tues Oct 23. There is NO SCHOOL on Monday Oct 22 due to Faculty In-service.   

Curriculum Information for the Week:

Literacy: Just prior to and following our annual trip to Melaka this week, the students will
continue working on their literary essay based on their selected short story. The inferential
reading and identifying themes is helping students to stretch their thinking about the book and
identify themes or life lessons using evidence from the text.

Math:  Adding and Subtracting Fractions continues this week as we move into operations with
mixed numbers and unlike denominators. Students will continue to develop their conceptual
understanding by drawing and labeling rectangular fraction models to show their thinking.

Unit of Study:  The students will continue our learning on Types of Government, and conclude
our preparation for the Melaka trip by looking into the rich history of Melaka.

This Week:

• Tues. 23 & Wed. 24 Oct: 5DH & 5KC will travel to Melaka. 8:00am departure.
• Wed. 24 & Thurs. 25 Oct: 5CB, 5CC & 5JV will travel to Melaka. 8:00am departure.
• Special thanks to our parent chaperones who are volunteering their time to help us

keep the students safe on the trip.

Highlight From Last Week:

The students were introduced and had opportunities to explore MakerSpace. Using various
materials the students were able to construct historically significant event in Malacca history.
